The breed
The miniature Dachshund
A miniature Dachshund measures 30 to 35 cm of chest circumference and weighs 4 to 6 kg as an adult: between the smaller Kaninchen and the standard. Expect €1,500 to €3,500 for a puppy in a classic coat, and €4,500 to €6,000 for a rare colour. We breed them long-haired in Seine-et-Marne, an hour from Paris.
Miniature, Kaninchen or standard: the chest, not the height
This is what sets the breed apart, and the source of nearly every misunderstanding: a Dachshund is not classified by its height at the shoulder but by itschest circumference, measured at fifteen months. Two dogs of the same height can therefore belong to two different varieties.
| Variety | Chest circumference | Adult weight |
|---|---|---|
| Kaninchen | under 30 cm | 2 to 3.5 kg |
| Miniature | 30 to 35 cm | 4 to 6 kg |
| Standard | over 35 cm | 7 to 9 kg |
- Kaninchen — "Kaninchen" is German for "rabbit": the smallest of the three varieties.
- Miniature — Between the other two, and the size most often chosen for apartment living.
- Standard — The original variety, bred to hunt badger.
For a full comparison of the three sizes, their history and which one suits which home, see our article onDachshund sizes: standard, miniature and Kaninchen.
What a miniature Dachshund puppy costs
The price depends first on the coat. A classic LOF-registered coat runs between€1,500 and €3,500 from a professional breeder who tests their breeding dogs. Rare colours — cream, dapple, piebald — run €4,500 to €6,000, because they call for specific bloodlines and a longer selection.
Beyond the puppy itself, expect €850 to €1,900 a year for food, the vet, insurance and equipment. The detail, and what explains the gap between a serious kennel and an €800 advert, are in our article onthe price of a miniature Dachshund.

From 30 to 35 cm of chest circumference and 4 to 6 kg as an adult. It reaches its final size at around a year old.
How much does a miniature Dachshund puppy cost?
Between €1,500 and €3,500 for a classic LOF-registered coat, and between €4,500 and €6,000 for a rare colour such as cream, dapple or piebald, from a breeder who tests their breeding dogs.
Is a miniature Dachshund suited to an apartment?
Yes, as long as you protect its back: no repeated stairs, no jumping down from a sofa, and regular daily walks. It is a curious, talkative dog that asks for your presence more than for space.
